To establish universal standards for accessibility and an informed use of recognized symbols.
OBJECTIVES:
• Perform a scan of current visitor resources, service standards and best practices both within the province and the nation, as well as internationally.
• Have all guidebooks and resource materials in the province publish accessibility symbols in their literature that accurate reflect their current state.
• Promote both internal and independent audits.
• Work with the Website Committee to produce a print and on-line accessibility guide for Nova Scotia with detailed listings of accessible services and facilities.
• Promote the Access Canada barrier free design rating scale
Transportation
GOAL:
Ensure adequate options for accessible transportation exists across Nova Scotia. This includes public transportation in both metropolitan and rural areas, private taxis, tour buses and vehicle rentals.
OBJECTIVES:
• Research accessible taxis and best practices in accessible transportation
• Write letters to councilors about accessible transportation in HRM
Funding
Funding for accessibility/ Grants / Loans / Tax breaks and Internal Sustainability
GOAL:
Work with government and financial institutions to help secure means by which organizations, specifically businesses and other for-profits, can afford the expense of making their properties and services accessible. This may include interest-free or low-interest loans, grants and tax incentives for either physical modification or training.
Obtain financial support to continue the work of Accessible Nova Scotia.
OBJECTIVES:
• Explore the current accessibility Canada program
• Prepare presentation to request 250,000$ parallel fund for small to medium sized for profit enterprises
• Present initiative to the Minister of Service Nova Scotia & Municipal relations
• Explore funding options and submit proposals.
Training
Training / Education / Tools:
GOAL:
To increase awareness and understanding about diverse disabilities and accessibility needs through education.
• Compile resource materials (including modifications required by various groups, database of experts, contacts, and product suppliers) that can be used to guide members of the community to have increased accessible.
• Design and print a pamphlet about Accessible Nova Scotia for dissemination
• Design a Website
• Work with post-secondary institutions across the province to include accessibility within their curriculum.
• Deliver workshops to communities across Nova Scotia on practical tools to becoming accessible and on sensitivity training.
• Establish a resource Centre or link with existing resource centers where operators and visitors can get information.
